How long can you keep a refurbished iPhone?
The interesting number is not the price of a refurbished iPhone but its price divided by the years you will actually use it. That changes the ranking of models more than any discount does.

iOS support is the hard limit
Apple supports iPhones with new iOS versions for a long time — commonly five to seven years from release — and with security updates for a while after that. A model released four years ago therefore still has real runway, but less than a model released two years ago, and that difference is worth more than a small price gap.
The battery sets the practical limit
Long before software support ends, the battery decides whether the phone is pleasant to use. Budgeting for one replacement during ownership is realistic, and it is often what makes an older model cheaper on paper but not in practice.
Cost per year is the number that ranks models
Divide the price by the years of support left and the picture changes. A cheap phone with two years of comfortable life ahead can cost more per year than a pricier one with five. This is the calculation that makes a mid-range recent model beat an old flagship for many buyers.
- Check the release year of the model rather than the year you buy it.
- Subtract the years already elapsed to get the realistic runway.
- Add the cost of one battery replacement if the model is more than three years old.
- Only then compare the price against a newer generation.
