Is a refurbished iPhone worth it? What the prices say

The honest answer is: it depends on the model, and the difference between models is large enough that a blanket yes or no would be misleading.

The saving is not the same on every model

On a model still sold new, the refurbished discount is often modest: the two markets compete directly and neither can drift far. On a model Apple no longer sells, the comparison changes entirely — there is no new price to anchor against, and the refurbished route is frequently the only one.

That is why we show the gap against a reference new price on the models where one exists, and say nothing where it does not. A percentage saving against a price nobody can pay today would be a made-up number.

When it clearly is worth it

  • When the model is one or two generations behind and the new price has not moved: the discount is at its widest.
  • When you use a case and can accept a marked grade: the cosmetic discount costs you nothing you will see.
  • When you would otherwise buy a lower range new: a refurbished Pro often costs less than a new standard model of the same year.

When it is a closer call

On the newest generation, the discount can be small enough that a full warranty and a fresh battery are worth the difference. And on the very oldest models, the low price has to be weighed against a shorter remaining life — the cost-per-year calculation matters more there than the sticker.

Every figure on this site is a price we observed, dated. We do not model total cost of ownership, and we do not know what a phone will be worth to you — only what it was listed at, and when.
